Who we are

Sherlock Holmes Sewing Machines is a proud family-owned and operated business, established in Stafford, Brisbane in 1958 by husband and wife team, Derek and Pam Holmes. Derek, a former UK Airforce instrument technician, transitioned into the sewing world after the war by joining Singer Sewing Machines. After migrating to Australia, he continued his work with Singer before opening his own store alongside Pam.

From the very beginning, it’s been a hands-on, generational journey. Derek passed his knowledge down to his son Peter from the young age of 8, and Peter in turn trained his own son Jaydan at 15. The family legacy grew further when Peter’s eldest daughter Eleisha married Daniel—a skilled aeroplane technician and car mechanic from Colombia—who brought his own expertise in electronics to the workshop and learned to service machines alongside the rest of the family.

Built on a foundation of craftsmanship, quality, and personalised service, our business has proudly supported the sewing community for over 65 years. From humble beginnings to becoming a trusted local name, we've helped generations of makers, quilters, and sewists bring their ideas to life.

Whether you’re new to sewing or have been creating for years, we’re here to support you with expert advice, dependable machines, and the kind of friendly, hands-on help that only a family business can provide. At Sherlock Holmes Sewing Machines, you're not just a customer—you’re part of the family.
